Pricing

The price of a recliner chair depends on its style, mode of action, upholstery, fabrics and accessories, which is why there is no price list on our website.

Most of our chairs are bespoke, made exactly to fit you. Our demonstrators take measurements, discuss your options and are then able to quote an exact price during an appointment in your home. We have recliner chairs in stock too, which means pricing for some items can be discussed over the phone, without having an appointment. If necessary, our experts can help guide you through your selection process over the phone.

We take great care to make sure we understand your needs so that we can suggest the best recliner chair for your own situation and budget. Did you know that we are the only national mobility furniture company to offer a full range of bespoke and made-to-measure recliner chairs?

The price of an adjustable bed varies with each person’s individual requirements. Mode of action, style, upholstery, fabrics and accessories all come into play, which is why there is no price list on our website.

During a free home demonstration, a member of our team will discuss your needs (health, sleep and bedroom décor) to help you choose what is most suitable.

There is also the option of speaking on the phone to one of our in-house experts who can provide information and prices over the phone if a home demonstration of an adjustable bed is not convenient.

The vast majority of our products are bespoke. Almost every rise and recline chair, settee, sofa bed and adjustable bed can come in different sizes, styles, upholsteries and fabrics, with added extras, all of which affect the price.

Customers enjoy discussing their needs with our experts, working out the best solutions, talking through fabrics and upholsteries, all to a price that works for them. Nobody is left disappointed. And everybody is left in complete comfort.

Don’t forget that if you are disabled or have a long-term illness, you may not have to pay VAT on any electrically-operated chairs, beds or settees.

Rise & Recliner Chairs

Recliner chairs use internal motors and mechanisms that allow them to rise and tilt to a standing position so that people with reduced mobility can easily get in and out of the chair. Recliner chairs also benefit from a footrest that allows the user to elevate their legs without changing the angle of their back.

Our ranges of bespoke recliner chairs take into consideration your unique requirements, whether you have mobility issues or experience certain health conditions. For these reasons, the mechanisms in our recliner chairs come in different sizes as well as weight options.

Some of our chairs are equipped with a single motor, whilst dual motor riser recliner chairs have a separate motor that controls the footrest. This provides more flexibility and allows you to customise your position until you are comfortable.

Operating a recliner chair is done by the push of a button on the attached remote control handset. The majority of our handsets have a simple two-button control.

If you would like to know more, read out guide on how recliner chairs work

Before you purchase a riser recliner chair, you’ll need to take some measurements. Our experts can, of course, do this for you entirely free of charge. Or you can take the measurements yourself.

The chair itself will need to fit into the room and have enough space to recline, but it’s also crucial that it is the right size for the person who will be using it. One of the most important things to note is that your feet should be able to touch the floor. To verify this, use a tape measure and measure the height of the seat from the top of the cushion to the floor.

You also need to measure:

  • Seat depth: measured from the chair’s backrest to the front of the seat. When you’re sitting back in the chair, it should be deep enough to support the length of the upper leg/thigh.
  • Seat width: measured from the inside of one armrest to the other. For optimum comfort, leave a gap of approximately 2cm / 0.8 inches each side of the backside/thighs so the arms can rest in a natural position.
  • Armrest height: measured from the centre of the top of the armrest to the top of the seat cushion.
  • Back height: measured from the back edge of the seat cushion to the top of the backrest. The backrest should be high enough to support the back of your head if you’re sitting back in the chair.

Recliner chairs and sofas are investments. As such, some people worry about how long they will last. The good news is, if you look after your rise and recline chair, it will give you many reliable years of service and comfort.

To get the best from your electric rise and recline chair, only plug it into the main socket and do not use an extension lead as this could cause overloading and damage the electrics. Keep your chair or sofa in a warm, dry room as damp can affect the electrics. Never use reclining furniture outside.

Our reclining sofas and recliner chairs are built for durability and many have removable cushion covers for easy cleaning. You can also give your recliner chair or sofa a helping hand by using a spray to protect the fabric. Make sure you mop up spills immediately with a damp cloth. You should also regularly vacuum your chair to get rid of any dust or debris. If you have a leather recliner chair or sofa, use a steam cleaner roughly every six months to lift any stains or marks. A leather oil or wax will help to protect the leather from drying out and forming cracks.

Our mechanised products come with a five-year warranty. If you ever experience any issues with your furniture, please call our service department who will book a time to visit you and assess the item in situ. In the vast majority of cases, any problems are resolved on the first visit.

Recliner chairs have one or more in-built motors that enable the various parts of the chair to be raised, lowered and tilted. How much energy an electric recliner uses depends on the number of motors, as well as how the chair is used, but generally speaking, an electric recliner chair will use around 14W on standby and 58W to complete a standard motion. If you’d like to be more specific, your energy supplier should be able to help you work out how much this is exactly.

Fundamentally, an electric recliner on standby only uses about five pence of electricity a day. There are actions you can take to lower a power recliner’s costs. For example, switch the recliner off when you’re not using it. Choose the right sized recliner to reduce unnecessary energy use – the bigger the chair, the more energy it needs. Buy a recliner with an energy efficient motor. Don’t constantly change the position you’re sitting in unless necessary. Also bear in mind that additional features such as heating or vibration will contribute to electricity usage and costs.

Our rise and recline chairs are made to measure, so have differing weight capacities. There are extensive options for everybody, up to 70 stone (445kg).

Accidents happen and daily wear and tear can take its toll on your recliner chair. Whether it’s crumbs, spilled tea, general dirt or pet hair, it’s important to clean your electric recliner chair or sofa regularly.

Generally we recommend deep cleaning your recliner chair with a steam cleaner at least twice a year and giving it a lighter weekly clean. Always treat spills as quickly as possible and blot excess liquid rather than rubbing it. Before you clean your recliner, check the manual or care tag to ensure you don’t use any unsuitable products. Then vacuum the chair with the brush attachment or wipe it with a microfibre cloth to remove loose dirt.

If your recliner is cloth or fabric, contact us before you start cleaning your chair and we’ll check the fabric’s instructions and give you helpful advice as to what is right for your upholstery. If you have a leather recliner you can purchase a leather cleaning product or make your own from a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar. If you have a faux leather recliner, use a mild soap or detergent.

Whether fabric, or real or faux leather, always test a small, inconspicuous area of your recliner chair first before using products. Always make sure your chair is completely dry before using it again.

Adjustable Beds

An adjustable bed works through a clever system of assorted joints. These joints allow the bed base to move independently of the mattress. Each of the joints rotates by a set percentage, which gives the user a choice of different positions when reclining.

An adjustable bed is easy to operate thanks to its user-friendly handset. The body of the bed rises or falls by simply pressing a button on this handset, enabling the user to control the bed, and set it so that it’s in the perfect position for them to get a good night’s sleep, or even just a short nap. In fact, adjustable beds are also known as ‘rise and fall beds’ thanks to this function.

They also come in a variety of options: single, dual or double. Single is, as the name suggests, suitable for one person and a double adjustable bed has one ‘typical’ double mattress that rises or falls as one unit. A dual adjustable bed is also a double but it has two mattresses placed side by side. These mattresses can be operated independently, meaning that two people with contrasting sleep styles can continue to share a bed, even if they favour different sleeping positions.

As our adjustable beds are bespoke, it means they are designed to suit all shapes and sizes. Some options are suitable for people up to 56 stone (355kg).

We offer one of the largest ranges of adjustable beds in the business. Our single beds come in the following sizes: 2’3″ / 2’6″ / 2’9″ / 3’0″ / 3’6″ / 4’0″ / 4’6″ and double/twins are available in: 4’6″ / 5’0″ / 5’6″ / 6’0″ / 7’0″ / 8’0″.

Our mattresses are specifically designed to be used on our adjustable beds. You can’t use a regular mattress with an adjustable bed. You will want to use a mattress that is made from latex or memory foam, a hybrid mattress, or any of our pocket sprung mattresses. Why? Because mattresses made from these materials have the flexibility to work with the curves and the movement of an adjustable bed base while maintaining high levels of comfort, durability and support.

Please note, however, that some mattress types are not compatible with adjustable beds and therefore should be avoided. Mattresses with coiled springs are not suitable. But those with springs in individual cloth pockets (ie our pocket sprung range) are compatible.

We recommend that, to get the most from your bespoke adjustable bed, you opt for one of our luxury mattresses, which have been designed by experts to perfectly complement our adjustable bed bases. Our range of mattresses for adjustable beds includes memory foam, pocket sprung, latex-topped and different combinations of all of these. After all, if a good night’s sleep is what you’re searching for, comfort and true relaxation always start with the mattress – and ours are hard to beat.

Yes, you will need special sheets for your new bespoke adjustable bed to ensure they stay on the mattress when the adjustable bed base is moving. Sheets for adjustable bed bases have features that set them apart from regular bed sheets. For example, they may have elasticated straps that sit under the mattress to keep the sheet in place or elastic that runs all the way around the sheet – not just at the corners – so they can grip the mattress.

Adjustable bed sheets also need to be deeper than normal sheets. If a sheet doesn’t stay on a mattress properly it’s usually because it doesn’t have enough fabric to adequately cover the sides. Many of us move around when we sleep, and that can cause sheets to come untucked.

You’ll need sheets that are deep enough to stay in place when the bed base is rising, or when you’re moving in your sleep. Also bear in mind that you may want your bed in an upright position. Your bed sheets will move with the bed and need to be long enough to allow for the mattress to bend.

Putting sheets on an adjustable bed isn’t too different to putting sheets on your regular bed. Just keep in mind that the sheets should fit snugly so they don’t pop off or scrunch up in the middle when you raise the bed to an upright position. Changing your bed sheets on a single or double adjustable bed is much the same as it is changing the sheets on a standard bed. However, it’s a little different for dual adjustable beds. Dual adjustable beds come with two mattresses, allowing couples who share a bed – but not their sleeping positions – to both enjoy a good night’s sleep. Therefore, these beds need two sets of bed linen.

To put sheets on your adjustable bed, start by placing each sheet over the mattress. Firmly tuck the elasticated sides under the mattress (or as far down the sides as they will go) or place the elasticated straps underneath the mattress. Whether your adjustable bed is single, double or dual, it’s a good idea to raise the head and foot of the base while you’re changing the sheets as this will make it a lot easier to tuck the sheets under the mattress.

Just like a traditional bed mattress, you will need to replace your adjustable bed mattress at some point. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend changing the mattress on your adjustable bed every eight to 10 years. This will ensure you get the best possible support – and the best night’s sleep.

The exact length of time your mattress will last will depend on the make and model of the mattress as well as the amount of use it gets. Having said that, if you are no longer finding your mattress comfortable, you should consider changing it (this advice applies to traditional bed mattresses too).

Regardless of its age, if you find that you’re not sleeping as well as you used to, your mattress is no longer providing the support you need, it has been damaged or is saggy or lumpy in places, or you are regularly waking up with stiff muscles or joints, it is probably time to start shopping for a new mattress for your adjustable bed.

Mobility Sofas & Settees

The word ‘settee’ isn’t used quite as often as ‘sofa’ or ‘couch’ so if you’re wondering what a settee is, let us help explain.

Sofas and settees used to be two quite different pieces of furniture and the settees of yore – settles – were more like a long wooden bench or pew, rather than something soft and cosy to sink into at the end of a hard day. Over time, however, cushioning was added to the settee and it’s probably fair to say you won’t find many modern living rooms or lounges with hard wooden benches in them – and you certainly won’t find a reclining settee carved from wood either!

Nowadays, the words ‘sofa’, ‘settee’ and ‘couch’ are used frequently and interchangeably and refer to the same piece of furniture. And although ‘sofa’ is more commonly used in many parts of the UK, you will still hear the word ‘settee’, particularly in parts of the Midlands and the North.

Whatever you call your sofa, settee or couch, you can rest assured that The Mobility Furniture Company has the most stylish and functional model for your lifestyle and health needs.

Unfortunately accidents do happen and general wear and tear also means that your recliner sofa will benefit from some care to keep it looking its best. We recommend deep cleaning your sofa with a steam cleaner at least twice a year and giving it a lighter clean on a weekly basis.

If your reclining sofa is fabric, please contact us before you first clean it so we can check the instructions and advise you of the best method. Also check the user manual or care tag to ensure you don’t use any unsuitable products. If you have a leather reclining sofa, specific cleaning products are available to buy, or you can make your own from a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and water. Faux leather recliner sofas can be cleaned using a mild detergent or soap. Before you clean your sofa, vacuum it using the vacuum’s brush attachment, or wipe it with a microfibre cloth to remove loose dirt.

Whether your sofa is fabric, or real or faux leather, test a small and inconspicuous area before using any products on it, and make sure your sofa is completely dry before sitting back down. Treat spillages as quickly as possible and blot excess liquid as opposed to rubbing it.

Have you ever wondered what the difference between a sofa and a settee is? You’re not alone. For many people, the large piece of furniture that we all sit on in our living rooms or lounges is known as a sofa. But is that the same thing as a settee?

A sofa is defined as a seat or a bench that is upholstered and has a back and arms. Its whole reason for existing is to allow people to relax and sit back in comfort. And as you’ll know if you’ve been browsing our range of recliner sofas, they come in a variety of fabrics and designs to suit any home.

So how is a settee different from a sofa? The short answer is: it isn’t. Not anymore, at least. But back in the Middle Ages when settees made their debut they were wooden benches, often with designs or flourishes carved into their backs.

These days, however, a settee and a sofa are one and the same. The only real difference is where in the UK you come from as you may find ‘settee’ being used more by people from parts of the Midlands and the North.

Jargon

Whether you’re looking for a mobility recliner chair for yourself or you’re exploring options for a relative, as well as choosing the style and fabric of the chair, you need to decide whether you want a single or dual motor reclining chair. Knowing the difference is important.

As the name suggests, a single motor recliner chair has one motor. This powers the back of the chair and the footrest at the same time, so when the backrest is reclined the footrest rises automatically.

One of the benefits of single motor recliner chairs is that their controls have just two buttons and are simple to use, something to bear in mind if you want to keep things simple or you’re purchasing the recliner for a relative with dementia.

As they have just one motor, single motor recliner chairs are cheaper than their dual motor chair cousins – another bonus.

On the downside, seating positions of single motor recliner chairs are limited to rise, standard, semi-reclined and full recliner. This means they may not offer a suitable level of support for people with particular health conditions, as there are fewer positions to choose from.

Whether you’re looking for a mobility recliner chair for a relative or you’re considering purchasing one for yourself, along with selecting the style and fabric of the chair, you need to choose whether you want a single or dual motor reclining chair.

As the name suggests, a dual motor recliner chair has two (or more motors) that power the back of the chair and the footrest independently. Some models have a third motor that powers the riser function, which tips the seat forward to allow the person seated to stand up more easily.

Dual motor recliners are more expensive than single motors but offer many more options for adjustment, which is an important factor if you, or your relative have impaired movement.

This flexibility means it is easier to find a comfortable seating position.

Another advantage of dual motor recliners are their reliability; two motors work under less stress than one. Cons of dual motor recliner chairs include their slightly more complex controls. Unlike two-button single motor chairs, a dual motor chair has more buttons on the handset to operate the functions of each motor.

No doubt you’re familiar with the term ‘rise and recline’ but what does it actually mean?

A rise and recline chair is a chair that allows people to recline back and raise their legs. Some even help people stand up too. Rise and recliner chairs and settees are powered by either single or dual (or sometimes triple) motors, which operate the rising and reclining movements in the chair. This enables the user to stand up and sit down with ease, offering huge advantages over traditional armchairs or settees for the elderly, or for people with mobility and health issues.

In a rise and recliner chair, the rising movement enables you to place your feet on the floor far more easily, without putting a lot of pressure on your legs, hips, arms and joints. Meanwhile, the reclining movement allows you to tilt the chair or sofa back to find a comfortable position to relax, nap or watch TV.

Having the recliner sofa or chair in recline mode can help to alleviate pain and symptoms of medical issues, and you can easily change your position with the handset.

Rise and recliner chairs and sofas come with a specific set of phrases and terminology. If you’re wondering what ‘tilt in space’ is, you’ve come to the right place.

Tilt in space means that the seat and back of the recliner chair stay fixed in position as you recline. This allows the legs to be elevated above the hips and is useful for anyone with poor circulation or swelling in the ankles or legs, as well as for those with neck and back pain and for people who are concerned about back and pelvis support.

There are a number of benefits to the tilt in space movement. The risk of friction or other damage to the skin as the chair moves is reduced as the legs can be lifted without changing the angle of the back.

In addition, when the recliner chair tilts backwards, it ensures the weight of the user is evenly distributed, supporting the lower back and reducing pressure points.

Tilt in space recliner chairs can rise and tilt to a standing position so that users with reduced mobility are more easily able to get in and out of the chair on their own.

There’s a misconception that rise and recline chairs and sofas are only suitable for larger rooms. If you’re looking for a recliner settee or chair and you have a smaller living room or bedroom, or a room with a challenging layout, a wall hugger could be the answer.

The benefit of wall hugger recliners is that they can be placed just a few inches away from a wall because the mechanism under the seat pushes the bottom half of the chair forward without pushing the back of the chair closer to the wall.

There are two types of mechanism available, electric and manual. Electric wall hugger recliner chairs have a single motor that controls the backrest and footrest through buttons. The main advantage of an electric wall hugger recliner is the wide variety of positions it allows you to get comfortable in.

Manual Recline wall huggers do not need a power source. The person uses their body weight to recline the backrest and a lever is pulled to bring out the footrest. Manual Recline wall huggers usually cost less than electric wall huggers and can be placed anywhere in the room as they’re not dependent on being near to an electrical socket.

Recliner chairs generally come in two options: single motor recliner chairs and dual motor recliner chairs. The difference, as their names suggest, is that single motor chairs have one motor and dual motor chairs have two, or sometimes three.

Determining which one to choose will depend on your mobility and health needs, or those of your loved one, as well as the features you would like the chair to have.

With this in mind, it’s a good idea to write a list of everything you want your recliner chair to have (eg ideal features, must-have requirements, etc).

As a general rule, people with greater mobility issues or those who suffer from conditions such as arthritis, benefit from a recliner chair with more adjustment options.

Single motor recliner chairs cost less than double motor versions but because the motor operates both the footrest and the back of the chair, they are less adjustable. A dual motor recliner chair has multiple motors that operate the different components and therefore have plenty of comfortable positions to choose from.

Take into consideration the needs of the user, not just now, but in the future. You may find that dual motor, while more expensive, may be the best option going forward.

Whether you’re looking for an adjustable bed for yourself, yourself and your partner, or for a family member, you need to know your options. The body of an adjustable bed moves – when you press a button – allowing you experiment with sleeping and resting positions. Adjustable beds are available in three different options: single, double or dual. As the name suggests, a single adjustable bed is exactly that: a single bed. But what’s the difference between a double adjustable bed and a dual adjustable bed?

Double adjustable beds have one double mattress that is operated as one unit. Dual adjustable beds have two mattresses side by side, which can be operated independently. This means that two people who sleep together can continue to share the same bed even if they prefer different positions when they’re sleeping or relaxing. However, if you sleep alone and you like to sleep in a larger bed, or if you share similar sleeping positions and patterns with your partner, a double adjustable bed may suit you better. After all, it’s all about achieve a full night’s sleep.
