We are delighted to introduce
Dr Rob Hicks
We are thrilled to have Dr Rob Hicks on board as an independent expert. He highlights key issues faced by many older people, and others who have medical conditions, and discusses how well-designed mobility furniture can help them to improve health and quality of life.
What is an electric riser recliner chair?
An electric recliner chair, also called a power recliner chair, runs on electricity and uses an internal motorised mechanism. This type of chair is usually equipped with one motor or two motors. As the name suggests, single motor rise and recline chairs have one motor to control all of the electric functions on the chair, so the back rest, foot rest and riser functions are all operated through a single set of buttons.
Dual motor rise and recline chairs have two (or more) motors to power the back rest and foot rest independently, giving more choice of seating position. Some even have a third motor to power the rise function, which tips the seat base forward so that people with limited or impaired mobility can easily get in and out of the chair. These chairs are highly adjustable, allowing for different angles of recline so that the user can find the most comfortable position.
Single motor chairs and dual motor chairs are both great options and can improve quality of life for people with limited mobility and/or a range of health conditions. The latter is more expensive but offers more options in which to sit in comfort.
How does a power recliner work?
Power recliner chairs run on electricity and have in-built motors that move the adjustable parts of the chair (leg rest, foot rest and back rest). The user operates the movement of the chair via an attached remote-control handset. Most of our handsets benefit from a simple two-button operation.
Some power recliners come equipped with a back-up battery that allows the user to return the seat to its original upright position in the event of a power shortage.
Manual or power recliner chairs?
Manual recliner chairs are extremely easy to operate, which certainly suits some people. Thanks to their lever operation, there are two simple positions to choose from – reclined or not reclined.
Power recliner chairs have many more positions in which people can get comfortable because they are operated by a handset. This precision of movement allows users to find the optimal position, whether that’s a gentle angle in which to read a book or lying flat for a nap.
The lever operation of a manual recliner chair, whilst preferred by some, can be a hindrance if someone does not have the strength (or desire) to use it. In this context, a power recliner chair is preferable.
Manual recliner chairs are usually more budget friendly than power recliners as their parts are not mechanised and they don’t run on electricity. As they aren’t dependent on the location of a plug socket, manual recliner chairs can be placed anywhere in the room.
When it comes to purchasing a recliner chair, however, the fundamental question is, “which of these chairs will make me feel most comfortable?” Electric riser recliner chairs, especially dual motor chairs, offer far more angles of recline and are a better option for people with limited or impaired mobility who need help finding a position to relax in and assistance in getting out of the chair.
If you’d like to discuss whether an electric recliner chair is the right option for you, or for your family member, our knowledgeable, experienced and friendly team are more than happy to advise you.

Manual Recline or Electric Recliner: Which One to Choose?
We’re taught from childhood that sitting upright in a chair is a natural, comfortable, everyday posture. However, for some, this position doesn’t always offer maximum comfort. Sitting up straight for a prolonged period of time can sometimes be quite painful, especially for people who have back or joint pain.

Do Electric Recliner Chairs Use a Lot of Electricity?
Electric reclining chairs, sometimes called “power recliners” or “motorised recliners”, allow for a range of movements when people are sitting down. The user’s legs can be elevated and/or their back lowered to a comfortable position for reading, watching TV, resting or sleeping.
