Looking for Mobility furniture in Newport?

The city of Newport is one of the gateways between Wales and England and has been an important location for settlement since the Bronze Age.

Snapshot of Newport’s history

The Newport area was named as Caerleon by the Romans and was an important base for military operations. Substantial Roman remains can be viewed in and around Newport, including excavations of the amphitheatre and public baths.

Moving on in time, in the 5th century, Saint Gwynllw set up a religious site in Newport, building a wooden church. This site has been extended, refurbished and adapted over the years and is now the historic St Woolos Cathedral. This city of Newport landmark was granted cathedral status back in 1949 and is a popular tourist attraction, drawing pilgrims from all walks of life.

The city has been a thriving port since the 15th century, and Newport’s strategic importance was enhanced even more from the time of the Industrial Revolution. Its network of canals and railways were built to enable quick and easy export of locally-mined coal, alongside iron and steel products manufactured throughout the area. This emerging local industry and increased wealth led to the construction of many of the fine Victorian homes and buildings which are still around today.

Newport today

The 20th century saw some decline in Newport’s economy, although its port and the majority of the steelmaking sector retained their importance for many years. As the 20th century drew to its close, the port and steel sector declined considerably. However, today, Newport is still a thriving financial and commercial location, home to several government departments, including the Office for National Statistics and the UK Patent Office, as well as the HQ for Airbus Defence and Space and the manufacturer Panasonic. The city now covers an area of more than 70 square miles and is the home to quite a diverse and multicultural population.

What is the population of Newport?

The latest available statistics for Newport show that the city population was around 147,769 in mid-2015, which was a growth of 1.39% from the population recorded by the Census in 2011. Like many areas of the UK, Newport is home to a growing number of elderly people. 2015 Census figures evidenced 14,062 people aged between 65 and 74, which was an increase of 12.1% on the 2011 Census. There were 8,059 people aged from 75 to 84; an increase of 5.67%, and 3,148 people over the age of 85; an increase of 2.6%.
