Dudley is one of the oldest towns in England. Shortly after the Norman Conquest, in 1070, Dudley Castle was built. It was originally made of wood, but was reconstructed out of stone in the mid-1200s. The castle was partly destroyed during the English Civil War, when it was a royalist stronghold. Over 100 years later, in 1750, a fire would destroy much of what remained of the castle. Its ruins remain on Castle Hill overlooking the town.

The industrial revolution would turn Dudley into a mining town, mainly coal and limestone. This, along with the expansion of other industries, led to a massive rise in the population as people came to Dudley looking for work.

The 20th Century saw many developments and improvements in the town. In 1937 the Dudley Zoological Gardens opened in the castle grounds. The first day it opened, 250,000 people attempted to visit. The castle and zoo remain two of the town’s most popular attractions. Dudley is sometimes referred to as the ‘capital of the Black Country.’ It is home to the Black Country Living Museum, an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings.
