For many of us, we spent our working lives dreaming of retirement, and our retirement dreams included travelling the world and seeing new cities. Having the means and the time to travel is a wonderful feeling, but the world is an overwhelming place! There are countless amazing places to visit, and choosing which one can be difficult.

There is no better way to spend your retirement than visiting new places and exploring the world. While a 2 year cruise around the globe is not an option for most of us, city breaks are an easier way to see the continent. City breaks are a great chance to see new places without being away from home comforts for too long. Fortunately, as European travel becomes cheaper and cheaper, there is no better time to grab yourself a bargain break.

Here are three of the best European city breaks for retirees. These cities offer rich culture, delicious food and many opportunities for walking tours, museum visits and relaxing in parks.

Prague
1. Prague

Prague is a beautiful and ancient city, steeped in sights, culture and history. It is exceptionally cheap and boasts many good eateries as well as some of the best and cheapest beer in Europe. Prague’s public transport is extremely easy to use and offers great value for money so that you can rest your legs from one sight to the next.

In Prague, you can visit sights such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and St Vitus Cathedral, as well as the many art galleries and museums available. There is something for every taste in Prague, and many short day trips to nearby Czech cities are possible and easy to organise. In the past, it was hard to find English speakers in Prague, but today the city is well equipped for tourists. Enjoy!

Linz

2. Linz

For a quieter city break that isn’t heaving with tourists, then Linz in Austria is a great choice. You can slow the pace of your trip down by marvelling at the Danube and the nearby rolling hills. Linz boasts some truly beautiful architecture, including the Main Square. This central gathering spot features the impressive white marble Trinity Column. Linz also has a collection of beautiful churches, as well as the iconic New Cathedral.

Getting around Linz is easy. The main city centre is flat and relatively small, with lots of lovely cafes as resting places to sit, sip a coffee and people watch. Linz also has a tramway that will take you on a scenic route along the river and up to the hills. Hearty plates of food will fill your stomach, and lovely classical music will fill your ears. Slow down the pace and enjoy Linz.

 Madrid

3. Madrid

Are you hoping to escape the chill of the UK? Spain is a long time favourite for Brits who want to warm their bones under the Iberian sunshine. That said, skip the crowded beaches of the Costa Brava and head to the capital instead. Madrid has a truly fascinating history that makes this a must-visit destination.

Madrid’s city centre is compact and easy to walk around, but make sure to avoid the summer months when it can get unbearably hot. The city has an efficient and cheap metro system so you can get around and explore with ease, resting your feet from site to site.

Madrid is full of large parks to relax in, as well as many art galleries (including the famous Prado Museum). The city is home to historic architecture, and is a beautiful place to wander casually with many fine restaurants serving delicious Spanish food.
