Quality Hospital Furniture for Your Home

With the population in the UK growing older, we are finding that more and more customers wish to be cared for at home, rather than in a care home. This is understandable as care homes can be very expensive, and the familiarity of home is a comfort as we become older and more vulnerable.

Whether it is couples who have been together for 40 years and longer, or individuals not wanting to move away from a place full of cherished memories, homecare furniture is a wonderful solution for those wishing for a helping hand in their day-to-day life, without having to move into a formal care setting.

What is a Homecare Bed?

A homecare bed is an electric adjustable bed with extra features designed to make it more suitable for elderly patients, or anyone with heightened mobility needs. As well as the ability to raise the head and legs, they may also offer safety features such as side rails, wheels, or a swing seat to assist in getting in and out. Adjustable height positioning also makes it safer for carers to assist with turning and other duties.

Despite these features, many of our homecare beds are designed to look like regular beds, so they don’t appear out of place or sterile in the home environment. Similar to any adjustable bed, homecare beds aid better sleep by allowing the user to find the most comfortable position. This in turn helps to promote health and general wellbeing.

What is a Homecare Chair?

A homecare chair is similar to a regular recliner chair, as tailored measurements provide maximum support in various sitting positions. However, homecare chairs have extra features to provide more mobility assistance. These include wheels, hinged armrests for easier transfer to another chair, high-support cushions or armrests, back cushions that can be customised and foot plates.

Designed to look stylish and fit into a home setting, homecare chairs make life so much easier and safer for both the patient and their carer. The rise function assists with getting the person in and out of the chair, minimising the risk of falls. For people with extremely low mobility, the electric motor function allows easy positional changes which helps prevent bed sores, swelling and other issues associated with inactivity.

What are the Three Types of Medical Bed?

  • Manual: operated by a lever or crank, and therefore requiring a certain amount of strength to use. Manual beds may come with a minimum of two cranks, for head and leg adjustment, or up to five to include bed height and diagonal positioning.
  • Semi-electric: semi-electric models include both manual and electric adjustment mechanisms. For example, the bed height is adjusted with a crank but the sleeping positions are changed with a remote control.
  • Fully electric: all mechanisms are operated by remote control. This is the safest and easiest model to operate, as no physical strength is required. Instead, the patient or carer can adjust all positions easily, without risk of injury or muscle strain.

The Benefits of Homecare Furniture

Our ranges of high-quality homecare electric adjustable beds and chairs are suitable for a whole host of requirements, from enhancing your current lifestyle to assisting with end-of-life care at home. This is particularly beneficial if the carer is a family member or loved one, as neck, back and shoulder pain is often exacerbated by assisting someone into and out of bed, and by helping them change position.

Homecare beds and chairs can also help maintain independence. For example, people who use them may no longer need someone else to help them into and out of bed. With a remote control, they can adjust their position and the height of the bed themselves. This can make a huge difference to a patient’s wellbeing and dignity, especially if they can get themselves to and from the bathroom.

Can You Put a Hospital Bed in Any Room?

Being bedbound may be isolating, so having a hospital bed at home can make a world of difference to a loved one’s quality of life. Ideally, a hospital bed should be placed in the bedroom, as these tend to be more comfortable for sleeping. However, if the individual can’t get out of bed at all, there’s no reason why a bed can’t go in a common living area, where they may have more company. This may also be a good idea if the light is better, or if there’s a window with a pleasing view.

The main issues to consider when positioning the bed are whether there is a convenient power source, and space on either side for getting in and out. In the case of space only on one side, you could choose a model with wheels so a carer can access both sides. If the doorways and passages in the house are wide enough, a wheeled bed can be placed in a downstairs bedroom so the person can enjoy company in the living room and still have a private place to sleep.

Can You Put a Normal Mattress on a Hospital Bed?

Ideally, any adjustable bed should have a strong and flexible mattress for support and so it retains its structure despite regular folding and bending. All Mobility Furniture Company’s homecare beds come with high-quality, locally-made mattresses, though exactly which one is best will depend on your individual needs.

For example, memory foam is an excellent choice for anyone suffering from arthritis, as its cushioning qualities cocoon and warm achy bones and joints. It’s also a good choice for a double mattress due to its low motion transfer properties. For larger users, our extra firm pocket sprung or memory foam mattresses cater for up to 26 stone.

Is an Adjustable Bed as Good as a Hospital Bed?

A hospital bed does everything an adjustable bed does, with a few extra features. Both are a good choice for anyone who spends a lot of time in bed – however when the user needs a little extra help getting in and out, or can’t get out at all, then a hospital bed is the better option.

If you’re not sure which bed is right for you, consider what your future needs may be. If your loved one suffers from a degenerative condition, and may need extra care and support in the future, then a hospital bed may be the right choice for the long-term.

Keep in mind that dual versions are available too. Partners can keep sleeping together as each portion of the bed has its own motor. Perfect your own position according to your preference without affecting the other sleeper.

What is the Best Bedding for a Homecare Bed?

In many cases, the best bedding is whatever you find most comfortable, though the majority of hospital bed sheets are made from a cotton polyester blend. This combination is both breathable (stays cool and comfortable) and durable (can stand being washed and dried many times). Specialist bedding, such as the luxury range from the Mobility Furniture Company, is often the best choice as it is designed to move with the bed, without bunching or slipping.

Some people who require hospital beds at home might choose antibacterial or antimicrobial fabrics, if incontinence or excess sweating is an issue. Whatever your choice, the comprehensive range from the Mobility Furniture Company includes duvets, pillows, flat and fitted sheets, mattress protectors, pillow protectors and duvet sets, so you’re sure to find the right product for your needs.
