What is a manual recliner chair?
In contrast to our single and dual motor riser recliner chairs that are operated via a handset, manual recliner chairs are operated by hand.
Manual recliners use a lever (or levers) to manoeuvre both the leg rest and the back rest. This simple design makes them easy to operate, particularly for those with dementia or for people who have a little trouble remembering instructions.
At The Mobility Furniture Company, all of our recliner chairs combine user comfort with the very best design available.
How does a manual recliner chair work?
A manual recliner chair works on the same principle as a motorised riser recliner chair, although its mechanism is simpler.
Single and dual motor recliners are powered by electricity via an attached remote control handset with buttons on it. A manual recliner, however, is operated by hand, using one or more levers.
These levers operate the leg rest, foot rest and back rest, lifting the leg rest up whilst simultaneously reclining the back of the chair.
To return the chair to an upright seated position, the user exerts pressure on the moving parts by pushing down on the leg rest until the back rest returns to its original position and the leg rest locks back into place.
Whilst this simple mechanism option is ideal for some, please do bear in mind that manually operated recliner chairs are unsuitable for people who don’t have the physical strength to either pull the lever and/or exert pressure on the leg rest to return the chair to its upright position.
Electric or manual recliner chairs?
There are pros and cons to both manual recliners and electric recliner chairs.
For instance, manual recliners are extremely easy to operate as they use a lever; power recliners have a simple handset.
A more budget-friendly option than their electric counterparts due to the absence of motorised parts, manual recliners won’t contribute to electricity bills either.
Manual recliners offer two positions, reclined or not reclined… very straightforward.
Power recliner chairs, however, have multiple positions in which to get comfortable so may be more helpful with it comes to living with health issues such as arthritis, poor circulation or multiple sclerosis.
To conclude, if using a lever is not a problem and you’re seeking a chair that allows you to simply recline and put your feet up, a manual chair could be the one for you. If you’d like more positions to choose from and greater levels of comfort, looking towards an electric recliner chair is a wise move.
If you’d like to discuss whether a manual recliner chair is the right option for you, or for your family member, our knowledgeable, experienced and friendly team are more than happy to advise you.

Manual Recline or Electric Recliner: Which One to Choose?
We’re taught from childhood that sitting upright in a chair is a natural, comfortable, everyday posture. However, for some, this position doesn’t always offer maximum comfort. Sitting up straight for a prolonged period of time can sometimes be quite painful, especially for people who have back or joint pain.

Do Electric Recliner Chairs Use a Lot of Electricity?
Electric reclining chairs, sometimes called “power recliners” or “motorised recliners”, allow for a range of movements when people are sitting down. The user’s legs can be elevated and/or their back lowered to a comfortable position for reading, watching TV, resting or sleeping.
